Most stores that search for a Shopify web design agency do not need one yet. A free or paid theme, moved around in the editor, covers a lot of ground. An agency earns its fee where the theme stops: a brand that must look different, product and collection pages that have to sell a large catalog, or a store whose conversion rate has stalled. This guide walks through the store one page at a time, shows what Shopify itself documents at each step, and names the studios that show real work for it.

We read 17 agencies’ own sites on 8 November 2026. Only 7 publish a price, so the cost section prints those and nothing else. The common claim that a design project runs from $5,000 to $50,000 appears on many lists with no source, so we do not use it as a fact. Every agency number below is that agency’s own claim.

Shopify Design Agency or Theme: Which Do You Need?

Shopify’s Theme Store lists 24 free themes and 1,342 paid ones, read on 8 November 2026. Shopify’s help pages say paid themes come from third-party developers, support and updates come from the developer, and purchases are final sale. In the editor you add, remove and rearrange sections and blocks, and the pages say that going further means editing code in HTML, CSS and Liquid, or hiring a Shopify Partner.

Four routes to a Shopify store design, with what each gives you and where it stops (Shopify help pages and agency sites, read 8 November 2026)

Route What you get Where it stops Typical fit
Free themeOne of 24 Shopify-made themes, supported by ShopifyYour layout is the theme’s layout; changes stay within sections and blocksA new store or a tight budget
Paid themeA third-party theme, with developer support and updatesFinal sale, support depends on the developer, code edits need a coderA store that wants more layouts without a project
Templated agency designA studio sets up and styles a theme to your brandStructure follows the theme, so unusual flows are out of scopeA small or mid-size brand; Williams Commerce prices this tier at £6,500
Custom agency designResearch, wireframes and page designs built for your catalogTakes longer and costs more, and needs a maintainer afterwardA brand with a large catalog, a rebrand or a stalled conversion rate

Before you spend on an agency, preview a paid theme in the admin. Shopify lets you try one and use the editor first, and your customizations are saved if you buy it, though theme code cannot be edited during the trial. Shopify’s page on adding themes has the details.

What Does a Shopify Web Design Agency Do?

The core work is the same at most studios, in this order:

  • Research. Reading your analytics, customer questions and competitor stores, sometimes with usability testing.
  • Structure. Wireframes for the key templates and a map of how shoppers move from homepage to checkout.
  • Visual design. Layouts, type, color and imagery on the pages that carry the sale, often delivered as a design system so new pages stay consistent.
  • Theme build or customization. Putting the design into the theme, from restyling a purchased theme to a custom one.
  • Launch and support. Testing, handover and a retainer for changes afterward.

Design is only one of several services at most agencies in this guide. Eastside Co, Ask Phill and Visualsoft also sell marketing, migration or replatforming, and Blackbelt Commerce says SEO and migration are larger parts of its business. If you need code beyond the theme, see our guide to the Shopify development agency guide.

Shopify Store Design Services, Page by Page

Homepage Design

The homepage routes shoppers, so agencies tend to show it first. Eastside Co’s Condor Cycles redesign began with a UX workshop, and its Origin Coffee site was redesigned and rebuilt around a subscription app. Charle Agency’s Cambridge Satchel project covers a rebrand, a custom theme, a product finder quiz and a personalisation tool, and Electric Eye’s Airstream case is an eleven-month design and build, which is far longer than most projects. None of these cases gives a sales figure for the homepage alone.

Collection Page Design

Collection pages are where a large catalog is won or lost, and almost no design guide covers them. Shopify’s documentation only lists defaults: a collection template starts with a banner and a product grid. Anything beyond that, such as filters, merchandising by occasion or a curated order, is a design decision. First Pier’s children’s boutique case describes faceted-search navigation and merchandising by age, occasion and brand across a catalog of tens of thousands of products, and Liquid Lemon’s Olipop work redesigned the homepage, collection and product pages together. Ask any studio how it designs for filtering and what happens when a collection has 20 products or 2,000.

Product Page Design

The product page is where agencies publish their strongest numbers, all agency claims. Fuel Made reports for The Office Oasis a 59% lift in desktop conversion and 62% on mobile, and for Turbie Twist an 87% rise in conversions. Studio Seagraves reports a 36% conversion rate increase for deKor within 60 days, and Avex Designs headlines a 235% increase in conversions for Kith, with no period given. Treat each as a claim to ask about: what changed on the page, over what period and against which baseline.

Cart and Checkout Design

What you can change here depends on your plan. Shopify’s help pages say checkout branding, meaning logo, background, colors and fonts, is available from the Basic plan up and carries into customer accounts. Apps on the information, shipping and payment pages and the Checkout Branding API are Plus only. A studio proposing a heavily redesigned checkout for a non-Plus store is selling something Shopify’s pages do not describe. For plan-specific work, see our guide to Shopify Plus agencies and their projects.

Mobile-First Shopify Store Design

A Shopify blog post of 10 August 2026 cites Contentsquare’s 2026 report: about 70% of ecommerce traffic is mobile, and conversion is 3.4% on desktop against 2% on mobile. These are Contentsquare’s figures, not Shopify data. Shopify’s Theme Store requirements add that themes must be responsive and work in the in-app browsers of Instagram, Facebook and Pinterest on Android and iOS, so test your pages there as well as in Safari and Chrome. Ask any agency to show the mobile design first, not as an afterthought.

Accessibility in Shopify Design

Not one of the 19 top-ranking pages we read covers accessibility, yet Shopify’s Theme Store requires an average Lighthouse accessibility score of 90 or higher, minimum color contrast ratios of 4.5 to 1 for text and 3 to 1 for large elements, and keyboard access. Shopify’s own guidance says following its guidelines does not guarantee a fully accessible store. Ask a studio how it tests contrast, keyboard use and screen readers, and whether that testing is in the quote. The requirements are on Shopify’s theme store requirements page.

Shopify Redesign or Refresh?

Studios price these as different jobs. Blackbelt Commerce lists a refresh from $4,500, a rebrand from $9,800 and a premium brand build from $18,000, with refreshes in 3 to 5 weeks and rebrands in 6 to 10 weeks.

When to refresh and when to redesign, with published price points (agency sites and a Shopify directory listing, read 8 November 2026)

Question Refresh Redesign
Is the brand changing? No, the look staysYes, or the product range has changed
Where is the problem? One or two templates, such as the product pageNavigation, catalog structure or the whole store
Is the theme current?Yes, and it still gets updatesNo, or it blocks what you need
Published price pointsBlackbelt Commerce from $4,500; Studio Seagraves lists theme customization at $5,000 to $20,000Blackbelt Commerce rebrand from $9,800; Williams Commerce custom design £19,500; Studio Seagraves lists store build or redesign at $20,000 to $50,000

The Studio Seagraves ranges come from its Shopify Partner Directory profile, not its own site.

How Much Does Shopify Web Design Cost?

Seven of the 17 agencies publish a price. They sell different things, so read them as a ladder, not a league table.

Published prices for Shopify design and build work (agency sites, read 8 November 2026; excludes agencies that give no price)

Agency What the price covers Published price Timeline stated
Williams CommerceSetup, templated design and custom design packages£1,500, £6,500 and £19,500; support £900 a month for 10 hours or £1,700 for 203 to 5 days, 4 to 8 weeks and 6 to 10 weeks
Blackbelt CommerceRefresh, rebrand and brand buildFrom $4,500, $9,800 and $18,0003 to 5 weeks for refreshes; 6 to 10 weeks for rebrands
Liquid LemonA fixed-scope build for a new brand, or a rebuild of a live store$9,500 flat and $12,500 flat30 days
Clean CommitA custom store with up to 5 custom templates; design is an add-on$9,590 fixed; design add-on about $3,000 to $5,000; $150 an hour for extra work60 to 80 days
First PierAudits and sprints, not a full design build$1,950 and $3,900; its page says full builds run low to mid five figures10 business days and 2 weeks
Studio SeagravesDirectory profile ranges$5,000 to $50,000 overallNot stated
Ask PhillTheme migrations, custom themes and enterprise custom work€20,000 to €60,000, €50,000 to €200,000 and €200,000+Months, not weeks

Two cautions. Clean Commit’s price assumes you bring the designs, because design is a separate add-on. Liquid Lemon’s third-party listings show an older price, so use the figures on its own page. For a wider look at what agencies charge, see our types of Shopify agencies and what they cost.

What Pushes a Design Quote Up

  • Custom templates beyond the first few, such as Clean Commit’s $500 per extra template.
  • Research and usability testing before design starts.
  • A catalog that needs filtering, bundles or subscriptions designed in.
  • Plus-only work such as checkout apps.
  • Several markets or languages.
  • A retainer for changes after launch.

How Long Does a Shopify Redesign Take?

Timelines the agencies publish, and how they differ by scope (agency sites, read 8 November 2026)

Templated designWilliams Commerce: 4 to 8 weeks; Eastside Co’s accelerator launch: under 4 weeks
Fixed-scope custom buildLiquid Lemon: 30 days; Clean Commit: 60 to 80 days, with design in days 2 to 20
Custom designWilliams Commerce: 6 to 10 weeks; Blackbelt Commerce rebrands: 6 to 10 weeks
Custom or enterprise projectAsk Phill: 3 to 6 months for a custom build; Visualsoft: 3 to 6 months for custom builds

Blackbelt Commerce’s own page says both 4 to 8 weeks guaranteed and 6 to 10 weeks for rebrands, so ask any studio which timeline applies to your scope, and what happens if feedback rounds run over.

Shopify Design Agencies With Prices Shown

The first group publishes a price, though not always for the same thing. The second group shows design proof but asks you to get in touch.

We left out agencies whose own sites show little Shopify design work or whose pages we could not read. Three studios returned errors to automated reading, so they are missing, not rejected. Several others, such as Studio Fulchi, show Shopify only in testimonials on their own sites, and a few list only a logo wall. Lists written by agencies tend to put the author first, so use this one to build a shortlist, then ask each studio for proof in your own category.

Shopify Partner Directory: What a Tier Tells You About a Design Studio

Shopify’s hiring help page lists four current tiers: Select, described as typically preferred by small and medium businesses, Plus for mid-market and larger, Premier for large enterprises and Platinum for global enterprise. Shopify’s partner program page says the Select, Plus and Premier tiers retire on 1 January 2027. The new tiers are Silver, Gold, Platinum and Diamond, with Registered as the starting level. They require attributed sales and shops, for example Silver at $25,000 in attributed GMV across one shop over a year, and Diamond at $500,000,000 across 25 shops.

So a tier measures commercial activity with Shopify, not design quality, and “Platinum” means different things in the old and new schemes. Use the directory to find studios and read their reviews, then judge the design work itself. For help choosing a partner more broadly, see our guide to Shopify experts and consultants.

How to Choose a Shopify Design Agency

  • Design work in your category. Look for two named stores with a similar catalog size and a way to contact them.
  • What changed, and by how much. Ask what the design changed, over what period and measured how, because most published figures lack all three.
  • Who designs. Ask whether the people on the call are the people who will design your pages.
  • What is in the quote. Research, number of templates, mobile design, accessibility testing, revisions and handover.
  • How you edit afterward. Ask whether the editor lets your team change sections without a developer.
  • Fixed price, hourly or retainer. Fixed prices suit a clear scope; retainers suit steady change.

Red Flags When Hiring a Design Studio

  • A percentage lift with no period, baseline or definition.
  • A logo wall with no named case study.
  • A fixed price with no list of what it includes.
  • No mention of mobile or accessibility testing.
  • Pressure to sign before you see any design.

What to Put in a Shopify Design Brief

  • Your store address, plan and current theme.
  • Your main goal in one sentence, such as a higher product page conversion rate.
  • Your top three templates by revenue, so design effort goes where it counts.
  • Catalog size, and whether you plan to add products, bundles or subscriptions.
  • Brand assets you already own: logo, type, photography and guidelines.
  • Your budget range and the date you need to launch.
  • Who approves designs on your side, and how fast.

Does a Shopify Redesign Hurt SEO?

It can, if URLs change and old addresses are not redirected. Shopify’s help pages say a redirect only works when the old address is broken, so check that each old URL now returns a 404 before you add one. Ask the studio whether product and collection URLs will change, who maps the redirects and who checks them after launch. For search-led work, see our Shopify SEO agencies guide, and for moving platforms, our guide to Shopify migration agencies and how to choose.

Once the new design is live, traffic and conversion work is a different job. Our guide to Shopify marketing agencies and their terms covers it.

Frequently Asked Questions About Shopify Design Agencies

What does a Shopify web design agency do?

It researches your shoppers, maps and wireframes your key pages, designs them, builds or customizes the theme, launches the store and often supports changes afterward. Design is usually one of several services.

How much does Shopify web design cost?

Seven agencies publish a price. Blackbelt Commerce lists $4,500, $9,800 and $18,000 tiers, Liquid Lemon $9,500 and $12,500 flat, Williams Commerce £1,500, £6,500 and £19,500, and Ask Phill €50,000 to €200,000 for custom themes. Ranges that circulate without a source should be treated as guesses.

How long does a Shopify store redesign take?

It depends on scope: Williams Commerce states 4 to 8 weeks for templated design and 6 to 10 weeks for custom design, Liquid Lemon 30 days for a fixed-scope build, and Ask Phill 3 to 6 months for a custom build.

Do I need a Shopify design agency, or is a theme enough?

A theme is enough while your layout needs fit its sections. Shopify lists 24 free and 1,342 paid themes. An agency helps when you need a different structure, a rebrand or a conversion problem solved on specific pages.

How do I choose a Shopify design agency?

Ask for two named stores like yours, what the design changed and over what period, who does the work, what the quote includes and how your team edits the store afterward.

Does a Shopify Partner tier show design quality?

No. Shopify’s tiers are based on attributed sales and shops, not design quality. The tiers named Select, Plus and Premier retire on 1 January 2027, replaced by Silver, Gold, Platinum and Diamond.

Will a Shopify redesign hurt my SEO?

It can if addresses change without redirects. Ask who maps the redirects and who checks them after launch.

What should a Shopify design brief include?

Your store address and plan, one clear goal, your top templates by revenue, catalog size, brand assets, budget and launch date, and who approves designs.
