ShopifyAgenciesHow to Choose

A Shopify agency is a company that builds, fixes or grows online stores on Shopify for a fee. The label covers very different businesses, from a three-person theme studio to a firm with a hundred developers, and from an SEO shop to a Plus integrator, so the first job is to work out which kind you need.

This guide answers the questions every buyer asks, then sends you to the one of seven deeper guides that fits your job. It does not crown a best Shopify agency, because nobody can verify one and most ranked lists are written by firms that put themselves first. Facts about Shopify come from Shopify’s own pages, read on 5 November 2026. Prices are what agencies print on their own sites, and each is labelled as a claim.

What Is a Shopify Agency?

It is an outside team you pay to do work on a Shopify store: set it up, design it, move it from another platform, build apps, bring in search traffic, run ads or email. Some do one of these jobs and some do all of them. What they share is that they work for you, not for Shopify.

Shopify Agency vs Shopify Partner vs Shopify Expert

Shopify Partner is Shopify’s own name for businesses in its Partner Program, and a partner can be an agency, a freelancer or an app developer. Shopify’s directory landing page says partners work independently and that you agree terms directly with the partner. ‘Shopify Expert’ is a label many agency sites use, so treat it as a description and not as proof of anything. Our guide to hiring Shopify experts and consultants shows how to check it.

Shopify Agency vs Freelancer vs In-House Developer

Three ways to get Shopify work done (our judgement, not data)

Route Fits when Main risk
AgencyThe job needs several skills at once, such as design, development and a migration planA bigger bill, and your work may sit behind an account manager
Freelancer or expertOne scoped job: a theme fix, a landing page, a flowOne person’s availability, and thin cover if they disappear
In-house developerSteady work every week and a store you change constantlyA salary before you know the workload, and one person’s skills

What Does a Shopify Agency Do?

Scope differs, but the work falls into seven groups. Most agencies are strong in two or three.

Shopify Store Setup, Design and Theme Development

Choosing or customising a theme, building page layouts and setting up products, collections, navigation and checkout settings. Redesigns sit here too.

Migration to Shopify

Moving products, customers, orders and content from WooCommerce, Magento, BigCommerce or another platform, and keeping search traffic by mapping every old URL to a new one.

Shopify SEO Services

Fixing the parts of a store that decide how it ranks in Google: collection pages, duplicate URLs, structured data, speed and content.

Shopify Marketing and Growth

Paid ads, email and SMS, conversion testing and full-service growth. This is a different skill from building, and few agencies are good at both.

Shopify App Development and Integrations

Custom apps, theme extensions, checkout customisation and links to other systems such as ERP and shipping tools.

Shopify Plus Work: B2B, Checkout, International and Headless

Features that only exist on the Plus plan, or that large catalogs need: wholesale storefronts, checkout changes, several countries on one platform and custom storefronts.

Ongoing Maintenance and Support

Small fixes, app and theme updates, and a monthly block of hours. Ask whether this is included or sold separately.

Types of Shopify Agencies and Where to Go Next

Start from the problem you want solved, not from a list of names. Each row below links to a guide that compares agencies for that job, with prices, terms and the questions to ask.

Which Shopify Agency Fits Your Stage?

This is judgement, not data. No source tells you what a store of a given size should buy, so use it as a starting point and test it against your own numbers.

Early-Stage Store

A new store with few products rarely needs an agency. A good theme, Shopify’s own tools and a freelancer for one job usually cost less and teach you the platform. Hire an agency here only for a migration or a build you cannot do yourself.

Scaling Brand

Once revenue is steady, the work splits into jobs that reward a specialist: search, email, paid ads, conversion. Hire one specialist per job rather than one agency for everything, and give each a clear number to move.

Enterprise or Shopify Plus Brand

Large catalogs, wholesale, several countries and heavy integrations are where a full-service Plus agency earns its fee. Expect a longer sales process, a discovery phase and a retainer, and check that the team has shipped the same kind of project before.

How Much Does a Shopify Agency Cost?

There is no market price. Every figure below comes from an agency that sells the work, so use them to sense-check a quote and not as a benchmark. Ask each agency to itemise its quote.

Price Examples Published on Agencies’ Own Sites

Prices printed by agencies in our guides (read November 2026)

Ranges Quoted by One Agency Guide

One Shopify agency’s own guide gives these ranges, which we could not verify and which other agencies contradict: a new standard store $8,000 to $20,000, a redesign $15,000 to $40,000, a migration $25,000 to $60,000, a Plus build with custom development $60,000 to $150,000, a Hydrogen storefront $80,000 to $250,000, retainers $2,000 to $15,000 a month and hourly rates from $100 to $500 or more. The width of those bands is the point: price follows scope, and a quote that does not itemise scope cannot be compared.

What Drives the Price and the Hidden Costs

  • Custom or theme-based. A custom design and build costs several times a customised theme.
  • Integrations and apps. Each connection to ERP, shipping or reviews is work, and many apps carry a monthly fee on top.
  • Content and photography. Often not in the quote at all.
  • Revisions and approvals. Slow feedback stretches a fixed project into extra billable weeks.
  • Support after launch. Ask what the first month covers and what a retainer costs afterwards.
  • Ad spend. Always paid to the ad platform on top of any marketing fee.

Shopify’s Own Plan Fee Comes Before the Agency Bill

Your Shopify plan is billed by Shopify, not by the agency, and it is priced by country and billing term. Read the figure on Shopify’s pricing page on the day you budget, and add it to whatever the agency quotes.

Shopify Partner Directory and Partner Tiers Explained

How to Use the Shopify Partner Directory

Shopify’s Partner Directory services page lets you browse service partners and filter by price, location, service, partner tier, industry and language, and sort by rating. When we read it on 5 November 2026 it listed 5,464 partners, and most cards said to contact the partner for pricing. A listing is a way to find and contact a partner, and Shopify says each partner sets its own terms.

What the Shopify Partner Tiers Mean

The tier names are changing. Shopify’s Partner Program help page lists the tiers as Registered, Silver, Gold, Platinum and Diamond, and says the Select, Plus and Premier tiers retire on 1 January 2027, with current benefits staying until then. The directory still showed the old names when we read it. Be careful with the word Plus: it is a partner tier name, and it is also the name of Shopify’s top merchant plan, and the two are unrelated.

As Shopify writes the criteria, a tier is set by thresholds on the sales and the number of shops a partner has worked with, not by how good its work is. That is our reading, not Shopify’s wording. A high tier tells you a partner is established, and nothing about whether it suits your project.

How to Choose a Shopify Agency

Define Your Project and Budget First

Write one page before you contact anyone: the problem, the result you want, the platform you are on now, the deadline and a budget range. Agencies that are shown a brief give itemised quotes, and the ones that are not give a number and hope.

Check the Directory Profile, Tier and Reviews

Look the agency up by name in the Partner Directory. Check that it is listed, read the reviews and see which services it has ticked. If it claims a partner status you cannot find, ask where it is shown.

Ask for References and a Case Study Like Your Project

Ask for a client who had the same kind of project, a named store you can visit and a person you can email. Results quoted without a baseline or a time frame are marketing, whatever the percentage.

Red Flags in a Shopify Agency Quote

  • A single price with no scope behind it.
  • No discovery or audit before a fixed quote on a complicated job.
  • A guaranteed ranking, sales lift or launch date.
  • No plan for what happens after launch.
  • Refusal to put your store, domain and ad accounts in your name.
  • A list of ‘best Shopify agencies’ on its own site that puts itself first.

Start With a Paid Discovery or Trial Project

For a large or risky job, pay for a short discovery phase or a small first project. It costs little against a full build and shows you how the team communicates, estimates and handles change.

Questions to Ask on the First Call

  • Who will work on my store, and who is my day-to-day contact?
  • What is in the quote, and what is billed separately?
  • Who owns the theme code, the apps and the accounts when we finish?
  • Which similar project have you shipped, and can I speak to that client?
  • What happens if the scope changes or the deadline slips?
  • What does support cost after launch?

Who Are the Best Shopify Agencies? How to Read Any Ranked List

Search for the best Shopify agencies and you will find ranked lists of 11 to 36 firms. Across the eleven such pages we read in November 2026, no agency appeared on more than three of them, and most lists were written by one of the firms they rank. There is no agreement because there is no independent test.

Use a list to build a shortlist, not to decide. Check each name in the Partner Directory, ask for references and read the guide for your job above, where each agency is read on its own website and its claims are labelled as claims.

How Long Does a Shopify Agency Project Take?

No source gives a reliable average, so these are claims. Shopify says most stores migrate in under three months. CartCoders says two to four weeks for a simple store, and DigitalSuits gives about 8 to 14 weeks for a simple store and 10 to 16 weeks or more for a complex build or migration. Human After All states 4 to 6 weeks for its fixed B2B package. Ask any agency for a dated plan and for what it assumes about your approvals and content.

How to Switch Shopify Agencies Mid-Project

Do this before you end the contract, not after:

  • Store access. Give agencies collaborator access, not your login, and remove it when the work ends.
  • Code. Ask for the theme and any custom app code in a repository you own.
  • Apps and subscriptions. List every app, who pays for it and whose account it sits in.
  • Domain, DNS and ad accounts. They should already be in your name.
  • Documents. Ask for a handover note covering settings, integrations and open tasks.
  • Payment. Settle work done to date against the stages in the contract.

Frequently Asked Questions About Shopify Agencies

What is a Shopify agency?

A company you pay to build, fix or grow a Shopify store. It may do one job, such as SEO or migrations, or run a store from design to marketing.

What does a Shopify agency do?

Store setup and design, theme and app development, migrations, SEO, marketing, Plus work and ongoing support. Most are strong in two or three of these, so match the agency to the job.

How much does a Shopify agency cost?

It depends on the job. Agencies print anything from a few hundred dollars for a small fix to tens of thousands for a build, and retainers run from about $1,500 a month. All of these are agency claims, so ask for an itemised quote.

How do I choose a Shopify agency?

Write a brief, shortlist from the Partner Directory, ask for references on a project like yours, compare itemised quotes and start with a paid discovery for any large job.

What is the difference between a Shopify Partner and a Shopify Plus Partner?

Shopify Partner is Shopify’s name for businesses in its Partner Program. Plus is a partner tier name that retires on 1 January 2027 according to Shopify’s help page, and it is separate from the Shopify Plus merchant plan.

Should I hire a Shopify agency, a freelancer or an in-house developer?

A freelancer suits one scoped job, an agency suits work that needs several skills, and an in-house developer suits steady weekly work. This is judgement, not data.

How long does a Shopify agency take to build a store?

Agencies claim roughly 2 to 16 weeks depending on whether the store is simple or complex, and Shopify says most migrations finish in under three months. Ask for a dated plan.

Do I need a Shopify Plus agency?

Only if you need Plus features such as wholesale storefronts, checkout changes or several countries on one platform. Otherwise a standard Shopify agency or a specialist is enough.

Can I switch Shopify agencies mid-project?

Yes, if your store, code, apps and accounts are in your name. Collect access, code and a handover note before you end the contract.
